Bartholomew Society Member Stories: Bud and Ann Herron

Pennies Forever...

The verb hope is defined as to have a wish to get or do something. In Bartholomew County, Hope is also a community that is filled with people who have a wish to do something wonderful for their town. Ann and Bud Herron are two of those people. In 2002 they joined with other current and former residents of Hope to support the northeast corner of the County through the Hawcreek-Flatrock Area Endowment Fund.

Bud was raised in Hope and his family roots go back 150 years in the community; Ann grew up in various small towns throughout southern Indiana. Where they both grew up, contributing time, talents and resources to their community was just something people did – it was a part of life. Now, Turning Point, Hospice, Big Brothers/Sisters, Book Buddies and the Bartholomew County Library are just a few of the organizations which benefit from their lifetime habit of generosity.

Old memories spur new traditions. Bud remembers “penny jars” located at local businesses during his childhood to raise money for playgrounds, class trips, Little League – things that couldn’t be afforded any other way. But the next time a need arose, the jar was again empty.

As Bartholomew Society members, Bud and Ann view an endowment as a way to give money that will be there forever – so the jar will be full when the next time comes around.
