Heritage Fund is a community foundation began in 1976 by civic leaders to promote and facilitate philanthropy in the Bartholomew County area. The mission of Heritage Fund is to develop leadership, promote positive change and encourage giving throughout the community. We are dedicated to strengthening relationships among not-for profits, donors and concerned citizens who want to invest in the community’s future.

Heritage Fund works to connect the needs of the community with donors, to ensure that gifts will be directed in the most efficient and desirable way. A wide array of funding options is available to accommodate a donor’s passion or area of interest AND address specific needs within the community. Donors are able to determine which causes they believe are most deserving of their donation and Heritage Fund’s goal is to facilitate that process.

Heritage Fund offers a wide array of avenues to make gifts – our goal is to provide convenience, flexibility and ease of mind for donors. Ways to Give include: cash, stocks and securities, real estate and planned giving including bequests. Online Donation for funds is also available.

As a community foundation, Heritage Fund is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization and all approved gifts are tax-deductible to the extent approved by law. Heritage Fund will send a confirmation letter for all gifts and contributions when gift is received.

Community foundations make up one of the fastest growing sectors of philanthropy in the United States today. Community foundations build and strengthen communities by making it possible for a wide range of donors to participate in creating permanent (and often named) funds to meet present and future needs.

Community foundations have become catalysts for improvement in environments through philanthropy that is visionary, diverse and inclusive. Heritage Fund Areas of Initiative include Learning Systems, Welcoming Community, Economic Growth and Bridging the Economic Gap.

Community foundations are a sustainable aspect of philanthropy - providing leadership and problem solving in the present and preparing for the future with a permanent endowment.

Heritage Fund is one of over 500 community foundations in the United States and the community foundation model has spread throughout the world. There are at least 470 community foundations in 41 countries outside the United States, with at least another 140 in development around the world.

Endowment Giving
• An endowment is a philanthropic tool that is forward-looking and sustainable. It is sustainable because it renews itself through smart investing and preservation of the principle.

• Endowment allows for immediate gifts because people have given to it in the past. There are funds available at any time to help with a variety of causes.

• An endowment speaks to the future of a community and the desire of people in the present to make sure that generations are ensured the same or better quality of life.

An endowment can be compared to a savings account or a retirement savings plan. People make donations to an endowment and the funds are invested with growth as a goal. From the income, grants and scholarships are made and the principle of the gift always remains intact.

In the case of the Community Foundation the gift remains whole forever and a portion of the income - about 4 percent a year - is spent on grant making. This "spending rule" allows for continued growth of the endowment through reinvestment of earnings and new gifts.

Focus on Service
Differentiating a community foundation from other philanthropic options is a high degree of personalized service for donors provided by community foundations.

Heritage Fund development staff routinely works with families and professional advisors to design gift plans that fit every situation and donor preference, ensuring that philanthropists receive the most benefit from their charitable contributions.
