26 Feb A Dream Come True
Earlier this year the community lost a great friend in the passing of Mrs. Marguerite Burns Rust at the age of 107. Born in Columbus, Marguerite was a 1929 graduate of Columbus High School and went on to receive a degree from DePauw University. A devoted wife of James Rust, although life took her out of the community before retiring to Bloomington, Indiana – Marguerite never forgot her hometown.
When her family farm was sold, Marguerite was inspired by her passion for education (and a love for animals) to establish two separate scholarships that would benefit Bartholomew County students: The Marguerite Burns Rust Scholarship for Veterinary Studies and the Marguerite Burns Rust Scholarship (for the benefit of employees at Columbus Regional Health).
While Marguerite shared the pleasure during her life of seeing local students succeed thanks to her generosity – Mrs. Rust dreamed of a greater gift to come. Marguerite included a gift to each of her scholarship funds in her estate – a gift that far surpassed any she was able to make in her lifetime.
Thanks to the planning and thoughtfulness of Mrs. Rust local students will have opportunities that they only dreamed of – and these dreams will continue to be realized far into the future. Marguerite’s gift will continue to inspire and change lives for the better. Community members and students will know her name and her kindness. Her memory will live on forever through her beautiful gift.
It is with gratitude and deepest admiration that we remember Marguerite for her devotion to education and her humble generosity. Marguerite Rust is a dream come true.
